THE PLEASANT RIVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY

 The Pleasant River Historical Society was formed in 1978 by interested area residents who wished to preserve the historical buildings and rich history of this Pleasant River area.  To that end several publications have been completed; historical awards provided to area students/scholars; and summer public programs are held with interesting speakers on various historial topics.  In 1997 the group completed a catalog of all the gravestones in all of Addison's 35 cemeteries. In 2016 we focused on the area industries and in 2017 we will be focusing on the native peoples who lived, worked, and passed through this area.  On Friday, July 14, 2017, we have planned Chris Sockalexis, historian of the Penobscot Nation, speaking on the ancient peoples of this area; Friday, August 11, 2017, Ed Jessiman will talk about the cultural distinctions between the native and European peoples and how they affected first contact and who and what changed thereafter; and on Friday, September 8th, Donald Soctomah, Passamaquoddy Tribal Historian, will speak on more contemporary history of tribal peoples in our area.  Kindly watch for local advertising to confirm dates/times/locations.  The Society meets on the first Monday of the month at 6PM.  We meet in several locations with the intent of highlighting the historical buildings and preservations thereof.  The public is always welcome and encouraged to participate.  For more information on the Pleasant River Historical Society, kindly contact Mary Thompson at 483-4777, Cathy Fonda at 483-4655 or Jeanette Perry at 483-6642.
